Creating personalised digital experiences, to support online safety for young children

NCA

Outstanding results
  • Improved operational efficiency through reduced calls to call centre

  • 1 Million litres of fuel purchased online since launch

  • Team freed up to focus on advisory services

The challenge

• Need a new website that delivers a tailored, age appropriate experience, to encourage users (children aged 4 – 7) to complete specific tasks (completing informative, safety games to earn certificates) - Core objective being to teach young children about online safety. • Improve editorial control and efficiency for the team to keep content up to date and relatable to children using the site

What we did

Netcel worked with the designs from TPXImpact to build a new visually stimulating, age appropriate website for the 4-7’s age range. Our team built a set of 4 online games featuring characters from an animated series 'Jessie & Friends' previously used by the CEOP Education team to encourage online safety as part of their education programme (see videos https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/4_7/6-7/videos/). The games involved helping characters from the animated series 'Tell A Grown up' (TAG) if they see something online that makes them feel worried, scared or sad. Each game was brought to life with the use of animation. Once a game is completed successfully the child has the option of printing out a certificate or downloading a certificate to colour in themselves. A simpler age-appropriate experience was offered to the 4-5 age group while the 6-7 age group were given a more challenging set of games. The site also shows videos of the animation series and links to help support parents, carers and professionals. Netcel’s robust quality assurance process ensures that the site performs to a high standard and delivers the right content and journeys for the specific audience.

Outcomes

• Completed journeys: Over 630 completion certificate downloaded i.e. children successfully completing journey • Session length: increased from 1m 57s to 6m 44s since launch* • Improved editorial control and efficiency: More flexibility and ease of editing to ensure content it is up to date and to control the look and user experience*. *compared to previous site

‘The activities on the new site are feel a lot more interactive and engaging for children. The new set up means we have a lot more control over the text on the site, we are able to adapt and change content as necessary to reflect our priorities. The editing process on the old site was a lot more restrictive and complex. We are also able to restrict the content provided to children of different ages to make sure all learning is age appropriate.’
